Desde suas origens, o R&B já assumiu muitas formas e já teve muitas fases. Por vezes esteve entre os estilos mais populares do planeta, e em outros momentos resistiu à pressão de diversas outras esferas musicais para continuar existindo em meio às próprias baixas.
Com tanta história assim, o Rhythm and Blues parece ter surgido há muito mais tempo do que efetivamente é o caso. Sua trajetória começou por volta dos anos 1940, em comunidades negras dos EUA, sob forte influências dos estilos mais populares na época — o R&B é, de certa forma, uma fusão do Blues com elementos de Gospel e Soul Music, além de ter referências no Jazz e no Swing.
Com o tempo, claro, o gênero foi tomando as mais diversas formas e incorporando também uma pegada mais Pop, que faz com que a versão mais moderna do R&B seja extremamente radiofônica.
